The Emperor’s New Clothes

The Emperor is enormously vain and likes nothing better than to show off his clothes. Two weavers comes to his court saying that they makes clothes that are like no others - anyone who is simple in the head, or unfit for his job, will not be able to see them.

All the courtiers say that the clothes are quite magnificent, and the Emperor plans to wear his new suit for the procession through the center of the City.

The moral of this story rings so very true ! What we are doing is totally absurd, but we can’t stop because everybody else seems to believe that it’s the right thing to do. And yet they can probably see it’s just as ridiculous as we can.

The little boy who literally sees through the Emperor’s New Clothes only appears for a moment, and yet he is one of the greatest heroes of all fairy tales - for he speaks the truth that nobody else dares to speak.

Many years ago, there was an Emperor, who was so excessively fond of new clothes, that he spent all his money on the finest suits.

He did not trouble himself in the least about his soldiers; nor did he care to go to the theatre or out hunting, except when there was a chance to show off his new clothes.

He had a different suit for each hour of the day. Just as you might say of any other king or emperor, “He is sitting in his council” - people used to say of him, “He is sitting in his wardrobe.”

Time passed merrily in the large town which was his capital; strangers arrived every day at the court. One day, two rogues, calling themselves weavers came to the court. They said that they knew how to weave clothes of the most beautiful colors and elaborate patterns. The clothes made from their cloths were like no others: They were invisible to everyone who was either unfit for their job, or extremely simple in the head.

The Audio Script

Narrator:

Once upon a time in winter, when the snowflakes were falling like feathers from heaven, a beautiful Queen sat sewing at her window, which had a frame of black ebony wood. As she sewed, she looked up at the snow and pricked her finger with the needle. Three ruby red drops of blood fell into the soft white snow.

Snow White's Mother:

Oh, what a lovely sight. If only I had a child with skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hear black as ebony wood.

Narrator:

Soon afterward, the gentle Queen gave birth to a little daughter who was as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as ebony wood. She was called Snow White. But alas, shortly after the little one arrived, the Queen became ill. She could not get better and soon she died, leaving the king devastated and little Snow White without a mother.

A year passed and the King took for himself a new wife. The new Queen was the most beautiful woman in all the land, and very proud of her beauty. She had a mirror, which she stood in front of every morning.

Queen:

Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest one of all?

Mirror:

In all the land, my Queen,
From this castle to the Seven Jewel Mountains,
You are the fairest one of all.

T was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets. It is true she had on a pair of slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use. They were very large, so large, indeed, that they had belonged to her mother, and the poor little creature had lost them in running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling along at a terrible rate. One of the slippers she could not find, and a boy seized upon the other and ran away with it, saying that he could use it as a cradle, when he had children of his own. So the little girl went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried a number of matches, and had a bundle of them in her hands. No one had bought anything of her the whole day, nor had anyone given her even a penny. Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along; poor little child, she looked the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell on her long, fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders, but she regarded them not.

Little Red Riding Hood

There once was a small village on the edge of a thick forest. One of the smallest cottages was the home to one the prettiest girls in the village. Those who knew her well called her Little Red Riding Hood.

The little girl loved to visit her Grandma and on the day of our story, Little Red Riding Hood was on just such an adventure. Her mummy waved her goodbyes and reminded her daughter, "Grandma is ill. Take her this basket of cakes, but be very careful. Keep to the woodland path and don't stop for any reason."

Little Red Riding Hood was generally an obedient child, so she kissed her mother and ran off saying. "Don't worry, Mummy, I'll run all the way to Grandma's and I won’t stop."

Little Red Riding Hood made her way through the wood, but when she spotted a strawberry patch she forgot all her promises and began to pick strawberries one by one. Each tasted better than the last and they were large, juicy and ripe. And just when she thought she would stop picking the strawberries she found another that was even better than the last.

Once upon a time there were three little pigs.

One morning, the mother pig said, "You must go into the world and make your own way."

So the three little pigs set out into the world.

The first little pig met a man carrying a bundle of straw and said, "Please may I have some of your straw to build a house with?"

The man gave him some straw and the little pig built himself a fine straw house to live in.

Soon, a hungry wolf came along. He knocked at the door and said, "Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

"No, no, by the hair of my chinny chin chin. I won't let you in."

"Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in."

So he huffed and he puffed and he blew the house in and ate up the first little pig.

This version by the Brothers Grimm is slightly more elevated: it involves no ordinary young maiden, but a princess, who like other princesses is sweet, but very particular about certain things, especially about not kissing frogs.

In olden times, when if you made a wish, it would always come true, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun itself, which has seen so much, was astonished whenever it shone in her face. Close by the King’s castle lay a great dark forest, and under an old lime-tree in the forest was a well, and when the day was very warm, the King’s child went out into the forest and sat down by the side of the cool fountain, and when she was dull she took a golden ball, and threw it up on high and caught it, and this ball was her favorite plaything.
