He`s all thumb......ادم شلخته
She doesn`t lift a finger..........دست به سياه و سفيد نميزنه
Whenever he opens he`s mouth he puts he`s feet in it.......اومد حرف بزنه راه رفت
He has a big mouth.......ادم دهن لق
Are u with me........داري منو...؟
Don`t look the other way..........خودتو به کوچه علي چپ نزن
Poor fellow.........بنده خدا
He is post master at ..............طرف خداي فلان کار است
Cut my legs and call me shorty........تو گفتي و منم باور کردم
She`s a liar liar........يه روده راست تو شکمش پيدا نميشه

M….O

 

mad as a hornet
- very angry
He was mad as a hornet when I saw him at the meeting yesterday.

main drag
- the most important street in a town
We spent most of Saturday evening driving up and down the main drag of the town.


make a beeline for something
- hurry directly somewhere
When he enters the cafeteria he always makes a beeline for the dessert section.

make a bundle
- make a lot of money
My father made a bundle on the stock market in early 1998.

make a day of it
- do something all day
We decided to make a day of it and spend the day at the beach.

make a dent in
- make progress
We worked hard all day but we didn`t seem to make a dent in the amount of work left to do.

On the house: مجانی، به حساب رستوران یا فروشنده

We had to pay for the food, but the drinks were on the house.

 

Know the ropes: فوت و فن را بلد بودن ، کار کشته بودن

Let john do the job, he knows the ropes.

 

Walk on air: از خوشحالی پرواز کردن ...

Mick was walking on air on his graduation day.

 

Save someone's neck: به داد کسی رسیدن

Thanks for not letting the boss fire me. You save my neck in time.

 

Make a mountain out of a molehill: از کاه کوه ساختن

Don't let such a trivial things bother you so much. You're just making a mountain out of a molehill.

 

Jump out of one's skin: از ترس زهره شدن

You really scared me. I nearly jumped out of my skin.

 

Twist one's arm: کسی را مجبور کردن

Daddy won't buy me the car unless I twist his arm.

Talking idioms

 

Talk

 

talk nineteen to the dozen = talk fast: "She was so excited that she was talking nineteen to the dozen."

 

talk the hind legs off a donkey = talk without stopping: "She can talk the hind legs off a donkey!"

 

talk something through / over = to discuss something: "Before we decide anything, I think we ought to talk it through."

 

talk something up = to make something appear more important: "She really talked the idea up, but I don't think that everyone was convinced."

 

talk someone into doing = to persuade someone: "He talked her into buying a new car."

 

talk someone through something = give step-by-step instructions: "She talked him through the procedure."

 

talk down to = talk in a condescending way: "Don't talk down to me! I understand you perfectly well."

 

talk back = respond to someone in authority in a rude way: "Don't talk back to your mother!"

This is similar to back chat: "I don't want any back chat from you!"

 

talk under your breath = talk quietly so that nobody can hear you: "They talked under their breath in the meeting."

English idioms of emotion

 

:-)

 

All these idioms mean that you are absolutely delighted!

over the moon: "He was over the moon when he heard the news."

thrilled to bits: "She was thrilled to bits with her new bicycle."

in seventh heaven: "They were in seventh heaven when they learned they'd won a cruise."

on cloud nine: "When I got the job, I was on cloud nine for several weeks."

jump for joy: "We jumped for joy when we got the mortgage."

These idioms mean you are feeling sad.

down in the dumps: "When she left him, he was down in the dumps for a couple of weeks."

feel blue: "She felt a little blue when she lost her job."

beside yourself (with grief, worry): "When her son went missing, she was beside herself with worry."

Annoyed because you have missed an opportunity

sick as a parrot: "He was as sick as a parrot when he realised he had thrown away his lottery ticket."

These idioms mean that you are very angry.

see red: "Don't talk to him about his boss - it just makes him see red!"

hopping mad: "She was hopping mad when she found out her daughter had disobeyed her."

in a black mood: "Be careful what you say - she's in a black mood today."

Less angry idioms.

cheesed off: "I was really cheesed off when I lost the competition."

to not be on speaking terms: "They're not on speaking terms at the moment after their row."

To be off someone's Christmas card list: "Oh dear. I think I'm off her Christmas card list after insulting her husband!"

have a downer on someone: "What's John done? You seem to have a real downer on him."

rub someone up the wrong way: "Those two are always arguing. They just seem to rub each other up the wrong way."

 

In desperation

 

These idioms mean you don't know what to do.

at the end of your tether: "I just can't cope. I'm at the end of my tether with all these bills and debts."

at your wits' end: "He's at his wits' end. He's tried everything to solve the problem, but nothing has worked."

Be Greek to one قابل درک نبودن

I didn't understand a single word of his speech. It was all Greek to me.

 

Work one's fingers to the bone سخت کار کردن،پدر خورد را در آوردن

I work my fingers to the bone to support my children, but they don't appreciate it.

 

Toot one's own horn منم منم کردن، از خود تعریف کردن

Richard's always tooting his own horn. All he does is talk about how good he is.

 

Piece of cake مثل آب خوردن

I'll fix the T.V. in a flash. It's a piece of cake!

 

Hold your horses دست نگه داره! تند نرو! عجله نکن

Hey, don't get mad! Hold your horses and let us explain.

 

Put one's money where one's mouth is به قول خود عمل کردم

She at last could get the A in her exams, how about putting your money where your mouth is?

 

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw رطب خورده منع رطب نمی کند

 

Shoot the breeze اختلاط کردن، گپ زدن

We sat around at home, shooting the breeze for hours.

 

Fly off the handle از کوره در رفتن

Every time we talk about money, my father flies off the handle.

 

Go down the drain به هدر رفتن، بر باد رفتن، نقش بر اب شدن

All money I invested in the damned business went down the drain.

 

All's well that ends well موفقیت ارزش تلاش را دارد

Assuming your efforts, I'm sure you'll find a good job. As they say:" All's well that ends well".

 

On ice راکد گذاشتن، عقب انداختن، در آب نمک خواباندن

I have two pieces of land. One I sell , and the other I keep on ice for a rainy day.

 

Get into the hot water توی هچل افتادن، توی درد سر افتادن

I really get into water whenever I play hooky.

 

Eating someone معذب بودن

Please tell me what has been eating you maybe we can work your problem out together.

 

Blow it خرابکاری کردن، گند زدن

I didn't write more than half of the question in exam, I really blew it.

 

Play gooseberry مزاحم بودن، موی دماغ بودن

I guess you two wanna be left alone; I'm gonna play gooseberry.

Feather in one's cap مایه افتخار

His last book was another feather in his cap.

 

Out of wood از خطر جستن

The doctor believe that the patient is out of wood

 

Rain or shine هر طوری شده، در هر شرایطی

I'll always do see Dad on fridays, rain or shine.

 

Pay through the nose مبلغ گزافی پرداخت کردن

We paid through the nose to get the car fixed and it still doesn't go properly.

 

Cross my heart به جون خودم، قسم می خورم

I didn't break the glass, cross my heart!

 

Put heads together مشورت کردن ، هم فکری کردن

 

Go fly a kite برو پی کارت ، بزن به چاک

Stop bothering me! Go fly a kite.

 

Feel like a million dollar/bucks کوک کوک، توپ توپ

How are you doing, pal?

I feel like a million bucks.

 

All wet کور خواندن، سخت در اشتباه بودن

If you think you can change my mind about marriage, you are all wet.
